Introduction
The most basic feature that makes cities resilient is their capacity to
maintain the historical-cultural-natural and aesthetic values that have given
them a characteristic identity, which they have developed in the process since
their establishment. Rapid population growth, the pressure of this growth on
world cultural and natural resources, the destruction of natural flora and life
system by human culture and civilization, the negative effects of economic
growth and industrialization on nature, climate and historical structures break
the resilience of cities and lead to the destruction of historical structures. It is
essential that these historical structures be passed down to future generations
as they have hosted various cultures and civilizations and served as a bridge
between the past and the present (Gülhan, 2022).
This essay examines historical structures, which are considered an important
factor in the making of resilient cities, in terms of sustainability. These structures
have long been de-functionalized and neglected, and have come to the
edge of destruction. This essay investigates the effects of adaptive reuse on
creating resilient cities. Adaptive reuse is examined in the context of resilient
city based on the case of Manisa Kurşunlu Han.
1. Methodology
While deciding on a research method for this essay, first of all, the relevant
definitions and concepts were studied. To this end, concepts such as
resilience, urban resilience, resilience in architecture, and adaptive reuse were
examined, and the contribution of the adaptive reuse of historical structures
to urban resilience was discussed. Then, the contribution of the addition of
the restored and reused Manisa Kurşunlu Han to Manisa building block to
the creation of a resilient city was assessed. Throughout the study, a detailed
literature review was made through printed and online resources. Since the
writer previously participated as a coordinator in a project on Manisa Kurşunlu
Han, all data concerning the structure were collected during this project and
analyzed for the current essay.
2. The Concept of Resilience
The concept of resilience derived from the Latin word “resilire”. Meaning
rebound or backlash in Latin, the word was introduced to English vocabulary
as “resilience” by English philosopher Francis Bacon, and its meaning was
interpreted as “going back to the original form” (Lfarakh, R., 2021).
